  • Liquid Membrane is applied in pools, firstly to waterproof a leaking pool — but also to keep water from negative pressure out. For example, negative water pressure is caused in concrete in-ground pools when the surface is wet after rain and the water is soaked up by the concrete. The waterproof Membrane therefore prevents this ground water from getting into the concrete, at the same time as it prevents the water inside the pool from leaking out. Negative pressure can also cause whatever current material is in the pool to delaminate. We have clients that have covered both small private whirlpools and olympic sized swimming pools with our Liquid Membrane system.

  • Most of our customers waterproof their wet rooms or the entire bathroom with Liquid Membrane. Depending on how the shower surface is built, whether it’s old tiles, cement board or just normal wood, the Liquid Membrane creates a more flexible and stable surface for the X-Bond or other finishes to be applied to.

  • When you have wooden substrates like MDF, Liquid Membrane can be applied over the wood before applying X-Bond. The Liquid Membrane can be applied straight on the wooden substrate. It prevents the wood from bending, and on joints it’s recommended to apply the Reinforcement Fabric to further stabilise the surface against movement. Our customers have used this method on custom furniture like basins or floors/walls that have MDF as a substrate.

  • Whether you have fairly new concrete as screed that can still get settlement cracks, crumbling old concrete, or old tiles that can get loose or fragile over time — you can apply Liquid Membrane to stabilise the substrate before installing X-Bond or other finishes for added security.

  • Liquid Membrane can be used as a primary waterproofing membrane to waterproof the entire flat roof. It isn’t used as a finished product — often either tiles or X-Bond is applied on top.

  • In Europe, Anhydrite is used widely on construction sites for subfloor as it’s lighter than concrete screed. Anhydrite is a mix of water and a gypsum based material that gets pumped into the building and is self levelling. It’s much faster to install and has a lower overall weight to the building. The only problem with anhydrite is that it takes very long to dry since there is a high volume of water. And, depending on weather conditions such as humidity and temperature, it takes up to 12 weeks to reach a relative humidity of 1-1.5% before any substrate such as wooden floors or tiles can be applied.

Liquid Membrane can be applied on the anhydrite just 7-14 days after it has been poured. A week after that, you can already apply X-Bond or other substrates. This would save a construction company 4-8 weeks of waiting time. Since the Liquid Membrane is also breathable, the anhydrite can still cure underneath and it becomes even harder when it cures slowly. This has already been tested on a couple of hundred units and more are to come this year.

FAQs

Considering SEMCO Liquid Membrane™️ for a DIY project or to help your clients, but have a few queries? Here are some frequently asked questions about Liquid Membrane.

  • If you’re looking for a high-quality elastomeric waterproofing membrane, you’ve found a product that does it all! The SEMCO Liquid Membrane has so many uses. You can use it in applications as primary waterproofing on wooden substrates or cement board and apply tile over it. You can use it to seal your leaking roof, pond, balcony, and swimming pool. It will preserve and protect your wood. As well as all this, you can also bridge cracks in your existing substrate to prepare for resurfacing.

  • The SEMCO Liquid Membrane has much better adhesion, with an elongation of up to 1300% before break. Most others on the market are only at around 800%. It can also be applied to almost all hard surfaces.

  • The coverage of the SEMCO Liquid Membrane™️ is approx. 2-3m2 per litre at 3 coats (0.75mm each coat). Coverage may vary depending on the porosity of the substrate.

  • Yes, absolutely! You can apply the SEMCO Liquid Membrane™️ on your substrate, apply the SEMCO Liquid Membrane™️ as a primary waterproofing, and apply tile over it with your mortar/thin-set.

On the other hand, you can also apply Liquid Membrane over tile. We recommend preparing your surface using PREP B (Power Cleaner and Stone Soap)

  • Yes, absolutely! We recommend a urethane based or water based acrylic paint if you wish to paint over the SEMCO Liquid Membrane™️

  • Yes, it is water-based and contains a VOC content of less than 14g/L.

  • This product dries hard with a semi-gloss finish.

  • Although it is not slippery, as it is a membrane the product does not have a slip resistance rating. If you’re using Liquid Membrane as a finished coat, more resistance can be added by adding ant-slip or quartz sand between coats prior to sealing.

  • Yes, you can apply Liquid Membrane to concrete and fibreglass pools. For fibreglass pools, we recommend sanding it with 60 grit sand paper and using Prep B.
