What Is Permeable Paving?

Permeable paving is a porous flooring solution, meaning it allows water to pass directly through it into the ground below instead of pooling on top. We’re proud suppliers of the Terradec Permeable Paving collection; a strong, textured floor finish made from natural stones. This particular system is hand-installed as a seamless coating.

Read on for more information on this innovative flooring material, including its applications, benefits, and design possibilities. If you’re interested in using it for your project, contact us for more information.

Where can you apply permeable paving?

Permeable flooring is suitable for a range of applications including: footpaths, garden paths, carparks, garages, driveways, tree surrounds, bicycle trails, terraces, balconies, swimming pool decks and surrounds.

Our Terradec Permeable Paving is hand trowelled to ensure a seamless result, able to be applied over an existing surface of concrete or crushed rock. This makes it a popular choice in both renovations and new builds.

It’s installed often in residential jobs, commercial spaces, and public works.

Why do you need permeable paving?

Porous or water-permeable flooring is becoming more and more important in construction projects today for a number of reasons:

  • Permeable paving can be used to retain soil and prevent erosion in areas with loose soil that are prone to heavy rain — including lawns, gardens and outdoor living spaces.

  • It helps manage stormwater by allowing it to infiltrate into the ground, reducing runoff and lessening the burden on drainage systems.

  • By stopping water from pooling on the floor, permeable paving minimises runoff and helps prevent flooding, particularly in urban areas with limited green space.

  • As water infiltrates through permeable surfaces, it undergoes natural filtration with a layer of gravel, removing pollutants and improving overall water quality.

  • It’s good for the environment. By allowing water to penetrate the ground, permeable paving helps recharge groundwater levels, which is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting vegetation.

  • Permeable paving also allows for landscaping within the paved area, providing opportunities for greenery and biodiversity in urban environments.

  • When properly installed and maintained, permeable paving is durable and long-lasting, withstanding heavy traffic and fluctuating weather conditions including frost and high UV levels.

  • Permeable stone flooring is inherently low maintenance. It also works to reduce weeds, making your gardens and other outdoor spaces easier to care for.

  • The above benefits mean that using permeable paving can help meet regulatory requirements regarding stormwater management and environmental protection.

What are the design options for permeable paving?

Permeable paving is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. Terradec in particular has various options in terms of colours and stone size, so you can choose a design that complements your overall landscaping theme. In the Terradec collection, there are six different colours to choose from and two different sizes of stones. The variation in stone size will deliver a slightly different texture for the final result.
